With one location in Glover Park and another more casual, grab-and-go taco stand in Dupont, Surfside brings California vibes to the East Coast. While the basic tacos on the menu are available all day and night, during the day, the Surfside menu also features specialty tacos, salads, burritos, and quesadillas in addition to the basic tacos. While I would have loved to try the skirt steak quesadilla since they are only offered 11am-11pm and I went circa 1am (true late night) I had to “settle” for an order of their famous tacos.

I say settle, but it really wasn’t settling at all considering how delicious the tacos were. While most of the taco places I’ve been to build your orders taco by taco, at Surfside you get an order of two tacos of the same kind, but can add a third for an additional $4. I had a hard time choosing one kind of taco to commit to (since they all sounded so good, and all of the Surfside reviews were no help since there were glowing reviews for all of the different tacos), but ultimately decided to try the Maui, which was made up of grilled rockfish on corn tortillas topped with black bean and corn salsa, avocado, cilantro, and lime sour cream.

It didn’t take long for the tacos to be made, and when they came they smelled delicious. The corn tortillas were warm and had a grainy taste to them, which I personally really liked. The fish alone is seasoned extremely well--I’m not sure what spices they used, but it was flavorful with a bit of a kick to it. The black bean and corn salsa and fish, were counterbalanced nicely by the avocado and lime sour cream (I picked my cilantro off). The avocado was fresh, and while I love avocados the real star was the lime sour cream. The normal sour taste of sour cream was vamped up with the tangy citrus flavor of the lime, which was subtle, but noticeable enough. The lighter flavors of the avocado and sour cream, in addition to the actual cooler temperature, helped balance out the stronger flavors of the fish and salsa. Creating a variety of flavors and textures in one bite.

If you go on a hot day (or night, like myself), I would also definitely recommend trying one of their beverages. The pineapple lime aqua refresca in particular is to die for--it’s not as sugary sweet as juice or soda, but lighter in flavor, and as the name would suggest very refreshing. While I wouldn’t have expected pineapple and lime to go together (since they’re both sharper flavors), they went surprisingly well together. Creating a refresher that was equal parts sweet (from the pineapple) and tangy without leaving my tongue curdling. Besides the pineapple lime, they also offer a strawberry hibiscus aqua refresca, horchata, and what’s called Montego Bay Punch--a tropical juice with coconut milk.
