This lot represents Asproguate's first year exporting coffee with the distinction of Fuerza de Mujer. lots features coffees grown by women farmers in the Lake Atitlán region of Guatemala. A premium was paid for the women's lot to recognize both its high quality and distinctive cup profile when compared to the main Atitlan regional lot. We present this coffee each year at Upper Left, always finding that these lots surpass others in the region—mainly grown by men—on quality. The results are spectacular sweetness and fruit flavors.
Tastes like cane sugar and pear juice.
Tastes like dark chocolate and raisin. Thanks to the abundance and flexibility that Colombia offers as an origin, we created Paisa to represent the classic profile of Colombian coffees all year long. We carefully blend two fresh Colombian coffees in order to present a striking complexity that is never out of season, and present it to you under the name "Paisa"—a term of endearment for Colombians used throughout Latin America.
Tastes like caramel, fig jam. The resulting blend is solid, structured, and easy to brew at home.
Notes of floral, berry jam, and melon. Rich and sweet; in our Abyssinian coffee we present everything that we love about Ethiopian coffees. Blueberry and strawberry notes imparted by the natural processing method dominate the cup before giving way to dark chocolate and hazelnut in the finish.
Tastes like plum, chocolate, and caramel. Deeply sweet, versatile, classic. Andino is a term of endearment for residents of Peru's Andes mountains.
Tastes like dark chocolate and graham cracker. Our Dark Blend is roasted and blended with great care to offer outstanding sweetness and complexity. It's fruit sweetness along with a slight char finish is truly something to behold and savor, a reminder that dark roasted coffee is the beverage at it’s most fragrant and distinctive, tasting like nothing else.
Almond, apple.
Notes of agave, orange, and pear. Buesaco is of the Caturra variety, a type found rarely outside of Colombia. Due to it’s fruit forward profile we source this variety as often as possible, particularly when available as a variety separation.
Honeydew melon, plum, sugar cane.
This coffee launches with fragrances of plum, red grape, dark chocolate. In the cup, soft ripples of red plum and vanilla swirl with almond and fig. Velvet body pairs with super sweet acidity. It's a clean, serene, and eminently comforting cup.
Chocolate, black cherry, malt sugar
Chocolate, creamy, caramel.
Brazuca is Upper Left’s first offering from Brazil, containing fresh seasonal lots from the Alta Mogiana region. Full-bodied and low acidity, Brazuca is a traditional-tasting Brazil at its best – chocolate sweetness up front, a touch of dried fruit on the palate, and a delicious nutty finish.
Termico is produced using a quality enhancing technique where cherries are exposed to heat prior to fermentation. The method was created by don Luis Campos and is employed for the first time with this lot from his farm in Tarrazu, Costa Rica. The result is fine fruit flavors, rare among coffees from this region. Notes of red currant, brown sugar, and strawberry.
For our friends and families–and for their friends, too–we are pleased to offer our yearly take on the spirit-filled Holiday Blend. What’s presented here is a fruit forward flavor profile with notes of apricot and sweet cherry, which stands above and apart from the bitter char that tradition dictates. Elegant flavors and a delicate body make this coffee an an excellent companion to the work of the contemporary home chef.
This coffee from Ecuador is a fine example of the storied Java variety— a rarity in Western Hemisphere cultivation. Fruit sweetness abounds thanks to the meticulous agricultural practices of producer Arnaud Causse and his team at Las Tolas, located high in the Andes of Pichincha Province.
Milk chocolate, fresh sweet cherry, ripe red grape Variety: Gesha Elevation: 1440 meters Process: washed High in the mountains of Caldas, Colombia, on the farm of Carlos Arturo Adolphs Garcia, you'll find him growing and processing variety lots that are simply one of a kind. For Upper Left's offering, he cultivated the Gesha variety, which paris with the unique Andean terroir to product a strikingly sweet and uniquely chocolate-forward cup.
Pineapple, banana, sweet melon, blueberry. As is often the case with some of our very favorite farms and washing stations, Anteneh’s farm is remote enough that it’s a true logistical challenge to visit. It is a full 4-6 hour drive from the nearest hotels depending on road conditions, which means that when you visit you should either bring a tent or set out before dawn, stay for an hour or two, and then turn back around to traverse the red earth roads of Limu back to your bed. Anteneh partners with Hirtu Berhanu and her sister Mahder Berhanu, who in addition to doing a fantastic job with the family washing station in Dumerso, Yirgacheffe, also vertically integrate with a few likeminded producers like Anteneh. This gives the chance to partner with both in a single integrated supply chain. An extremely hard worker who is dedicated to quality, Anteneh has been working to implement some unique quality protocols that work with his remote farm context, since it is challenging to visit in person. So far, the results are exceptional. Natural Process: cherries are carefully picked, with eye for uniform ripe red fruit. These are then placed on raised beds on Anteneh’s farm, where they dry under the hot Ethiopian sun until they reach ideal moisture content of around 10%, 14-21 days depending on the temperature and weather. When rain comes and at night, the workers at the farm cover the beds with the ubiquitous bright yellow plastic that appears on coffee sites all over the country, until it is safe to open them up again. Once fully dried, the cherries are put in jute bags and transported to Addis Ababa for final export processing.
