An "orange wine" made with Riesling? It sounds wild, but this wine, from a small family operation in Healdsburg, is more food-friendly than way-out. With a little patience, and a lot of enological experience, some experiments just go right, very right. Winemaker's notes: "The Riesling was fermented on the skins and then remained on the skins for ten days of extended maceration. This gave the wine heightened color (orange tones) as well as more of the unique spiciness that Riesling is known for. We put it through full Malo-lactic fermentation which gives it increased balance against the intensity of the extracted skin tannins. Early flavor profiles of the Riesling are Quince, Pomello, tart apple, and all spice. It continues to evolve with bottle aging. Our Riesling has great food pairing capabilities, especially with spicy dishes, where most wines have limitations."

92pts James Suckling The 2019 Riesling Quarzit is bright, pure and flinty on the stony/dusty but also charmingly fruity and very delicate picture-book nose. Round and lush on the palate, this is a charming but tensioned and grippy Riesling from Meddersheim. Due to the residual sugar, which is somewhere between medium dry and medium sweet, this is not an ascetic but tensioned and thrilling Riesling that delivers the quartzite terroir in an accessible style. The minor grip and complex acidity would be too challenging for a wine at this precise point. I am sure it will be fabulous after some years of bottle aging. The Loewen estate has slowly grown from just 1 hectare in 1803 to 15 hectares today, all planted to Riesling and most are old vines on steep slopes around the village of Liewen. This "Estate" label was formerly released as a single vineyard Kabinett from the Liewener Klostergarten and is clearly a cut above your typical estate offerings. Christopher and his father Karl-Josef keep things very natural in the winemaking process, including whole cluster press, ambient yeast fermentation in 1000L 25 year old Fuder, and bottles with minimal sulfur. An excellent Riesling whose slight sweetness is perfectly balanced by the brisk acidity. Light bodied with green apple, peach, and river stones.

Crushed rocks and sea spray scents over a core of green and yellow apples and Bosc pears plus a hint of marzipan. Medium-bodied, the palate bursts with apple and pear flavors with a racy backbone and savory finish.
95pts - Decanter and their Gold Medal. Yannick Cadiou is a very experienced man. He’s been at Domaine Laroche, one of the most consistent producers in Chablis, up until very recently. He was their Vineyard manager but arrived in Chablis back in 1984. His family is from the Loire. He now has 2 hectares of vines, so very little, with 2018 being his first vintage. Everything is organically farmed. The wines, just like the man, are modest in appearance: lower alcohol and no cru level vineyards. But once tasted, they are wines full of life, with a mouth-filling texture. Glorious examples of their region, made by someone who cares about the ground they are made on. A very comforting discovery and a great reminder of what made Chablis so popular in the first place.

Magnificent Belgrave, very Saint-Julien in style. Chateau Belgrave was originally a highly reputed hunting pavilion during the reign of Louis XV, the expansion of the vineyards was particularly influenced by the Coutanceau family, whose name was first adopted for the estate’s wines during the classification of Bordeaux wines carried out by Guillaume Lawton in 1815. The “Bellegrave” designation first appeared in 1845, when Bruno Devès, a negociant in Bordeaux, remodelled the estate, favoring vine growing on the finest gravel terroirs. He built residences, tank rooms and wineries, and constructed the existing residence on the site of the original hunting pavilion. The wine was classified as a 5th growth in 1855, still bearing the name of Coutanceau, whilst the “Belgrave” name was only to be attributed at the beginning of the 20th century by Marcel Alibert, founder of the Syndicate of Crus Classés, and owner of the estate for almost 30 years. The link between the wine and hunting explains the ferret that features on the packaging, and also the name “Diane de Belgrave” given to its second wine.

When you look at the three single-vineyard Pinot Noirs we produce, they all bring something different to the table. The Bucher brings lush fruits and lots of earthy notes. The Starscape Vineyard brings the very easy drinking qualities of red fruits and soft tannins. Hallberg brings structure to the wine as well as darker fruits and Asian spices. When we create a barrel selection from these vineyards the result is a complete wine with several layers and flavor profiles. This is our best representation of the Russian River Valley.

This is a bold and rich wine, a blend totally dominated by 90% Merlot. It is fruity, structured and with fine juicy black fruits and acidity. The 12 months of wood aging have given the wine an edge of spice that is attractive now. Final tannins will allow it to age. Drink from 2021 - ROGER VOSS
The Pommard appellation, situated between Beaune and Volnay in an area known for its red wine, displays much heterogeneity, both in terms of exposition and of soil type. The vines of the estate are situated in two localities, Les Vaumuriens and Les Chanlins, at the top of the hill, and are south-east-facing. Tasting notes: A deep red robe; on the nose it evokes a fresh fruit aroma that alters with age to chocolate and peppery notes; full and well-structured on the palate.

The Prevostini family have been producing wine on the terraced slopes of Valtellina since the mid-1940s. Bright ruby red in color with moderate transparency. The nose reveals fresh and fruity aromas of berries with very clean and pleasing aromas that start with hints of cherry, currant and strawberry followed by scents of rose and violet. A unique, distinctly different style of Alpine Nebbiolo at a great value.
This traditional Austrian variety is an offspring of the Pinot Noir grape. It is similar in structure and silkiness yet has a distinct spiciness and a hint of dark fruit. It has a dark purple color with a fine and fruity nose. The structure of this wine is elegant with flavors of Morello cherry. It has pleasant acidity and a clear variety-typical character. Very seductive.
From the Sangiovese Prugnolo Gentile vineyards, one bottle per plant, it ferments in wood and ages in large and small oak barrels for 18 months to then refine at least 6 months in the bottle. 2010 was an incredible vintage. After a difficult and “extended” winter, and a spring with a complicated health pressures on the plant, the evolution was a positive recovery following a subpar blossoming. However, a fresh and cloudy September seemed to have compromised the phenolic concentration, but finished with a magnificent outburst in the last days of the month, expressing power and elegance in this Vino Nobile.
According to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle in 2018, Monterey County is "a coastal getaway that serves as an escape from the daily grind, and as a happy place for those who identify with sea otters as their spirit animals". While that sentiment is beautiful, one must not forget that Monterey County has become increasingly recognized for its balanced, nuanced wines. With nearly a decade to mellow out, this classic Brunello becomes more ravishing by the day, showing dried figs, candied cherries, hazelnuts, and sun-baked leather. In the past 20 years, only seven vintages in this heralded wine region have received praise. 2012 was one of those years, earning the title of "outstanding" by the regulatory body of the region, the Consorzio Brunello di Montalcino.
A unique, red blend from Northern Italy. While slightly more obscure, the native "Freisa" grape leads the way in this blend with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot providing the structure and backbone. Larger than life author and maestro of imbibing, Ernest Hemingway, notably mentioned the wilder and more rustic Freisa grape in his book Farewell to Arms noting a "clear, red, tannic and lovely" wine. From the winery: Above the town of Freestone, Hawk Hill Vineyard is perched on a steep, Goldridge soil covered slope just a few miles from the Pacific. Shaped by the coastal climate, this low yielding vineyard is farmed by the Yarak family. The two decades old vines work late into the fall to ripen and develop detailed flavors in its tiny berries. Limpid ruby color. As usual, there is a ton of detail in the aromas at Hawk Hill. An overlay of reductive coffee bean comes out first, then briary red fruit, rose petal, tea leaf, citrus peel, and flint all lift readily from the glass. This site at the end of the coastal opening coming from Bodega grows remarkable fruit that develops into a refined and elegant wine, whose pleasing texture coats the palate with flavor. The other part, 25 years old, comes from a parcel on the top of the slope (300 with 325m), which is steeply sloping, on humus-bearing black soil, gravelo-stony, very calcareous. The bottom is him also calcareous and stony. Vinified separately, the wines resulting from these 2 parcels are assembled just before the bottling, after a breeding on dregs in 50% of new barrels. Vosne Romanée is the flower of the domaine. Scents of cherry and rose, this wine becomes complex with age, with a nose of underwood, decaying leaves and mushrooms. 92pts James Suckling The 2019 Riesling Quarzit is bright, pure and flinty on the stony/dusty but also charmingly fruity and very delicate picture-book nose. Round and lush on the palate, this is a charming but tensioned and grippy Riesling from Meddersheim. Due to the residual sugar, which is somewhere between medium dry and medium sweet, this is not an ascetic but tensioned and thrilling Riesling that delivers the quartzite terroir in an accessible style. The minor grip and complex acidity would be too challenging for a wine at this precise point. I am sure it will be fabulous after some years of bottle aging. To me, this is another picture-book Riesling form Harald Hexamer
The Loewen estate has slowly grown from just 1 hectare in 1803 to 15 hectares today, all planted to Riesling and most are old vines on steep slopes around the village of Liewen. This "Estate" label was formerly released as a single vineyard Kabinett from the Liewener Klostergarten and is clearly a cut above your typical estate offerings. Christopher and his father Karl-Josef keep things very natural in the winemaking process, including whole cluster press, ambient yeast fermentation in 1000L 25 year old Fuder, and bottles with minimal sulfur. An excellent Riesling whose slight sweetness is perfectly balanced by the brisk acidity. Light bodied with green apple, peach, and river stones.
